The trophy waiting for Egan Bernal

Giro stage 21 route: The start of the ITT is set in the centre of Senago. The stage is played out on wide and mostly straight roads, as far as Sesto San Giovanni. From here on, the course runs almost straight up to 2 km from the finish in Piazza Duomo. Tramway tracks, roundabouts and street furniture are found repeatedly along the route. In the stage finale, the route first runs on wide avenues, and then on narrowed roads over the last few hundred metres, with several consecutive 90-degree turns over the last 100-150 metres, before entering Piazza Duomo. The home straight (250m) is on 6m wide stone-paved road.

The time trial didn’t go well for Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) with a crash near the finish

Affini was expecting a better race

A strong ride from Almeida moved him to 6th place

Simon Yates had no pressure to finish in third place overall

With a fast time trial Caruso put time in to Bernal and Yates, but no change from second spot

No panic for Egan Bernal

Job well done for Egan Bernal

Stage winner, Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers): “To win my fifth ITT in the Giro is fantastic. Today I also beat bad luck, I had a puncture but I managed to change the bike really fast, like an F1 pit stop. As a team, we brought home a beautiful result. Egan Bernal did something wonderful that has been built over these last three weeks. We worked hard to keep Egan always at the front of the peloton: this Maglia Rosa is a success for the whole team and thanks to Egan for having finished it all off in the best possible way.”

A happy Colombian

The final overall winner, Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers): “I can’t believe what’s happening, I have just won the Giro d’Italia, I really have no words. I have had two difficult years with some problems that I hope to have put behind me with this success. The Maglia Rosa is special and the Giro is the most beautiful race in the world. I have no words to describe everything I feel. In this race I found the freedom to ride as I like, I will never forget these three weeks.”
