The new Specialized S-Works 7 Lace takes the ultra-stiff, race-ready Powerline carbon outsole of the original and swaps BOA dials for laces to make it a bit more casual.
But, by removing the dial hardware, they’ve also removed cost, making these about $100 more affordable without giving up any of the performance. They even keep the same light 236g claimed weight.
The engineered mesh upper is the same as the same as the BOA version, but just with six eyelets per side. Specialized says the removal of the larger dial hardware helps the upper form fit to a wider variety of foot shapes, and lets you customize the tension across a wider cross-section of your foot.
If you didn’t like the BOA version’s fit, they suggest giving this a try to see how different the feel is. We have a set in for testing and they are indeed very comfortable, full review coming later. If you like shoes with a little more volume, their S-Works Ares shoes are amazing.
The FACT Powerline carbon outsole has a large vent hole in the front, but no exit port, and they keep the titanium cleat hardware. It’s their stiffest (15.0 rating) and lightest outsole, using a trussed structure to maximize stiffness while reducing material. Grippy heel and toe bumpers make them easier to walk in, and the heel pad is replaceable.
The last is built around their Body Geometry design, which helps align the foot and knee, splay the metatarsals a bit, and generally keep your feet feeling fresher and legs stronger. The insole offers the same added arch support introduced on the S-Works 7 BOA models.
The PadLock heel cup carries over, too, which works great at locking your heel in place for better power output when pulling through the pedal stroke. Assisting this are no-stretch laces, so the fit will remain consistent throughout your ride.
The shoes come in sizes from 36 to 49, with half sizes from 38.5 to 46.5, all in a unisex design.
It’s available in Vivid Coral, Black and White. The claimed 236g weight is for a single shoe, size 44. Retail price is $325 (£300 / $50o AUD / €350).
